Born in Reims, Jean-Baptiste, count Drouet-d'Erlon was an army volunteer in 1792 and took part in the campaigns of the revolution of 1789 and the first empire. Imprisoned during the First restoration, he joined napoléon i during the hundred days, was made a peer of France, and fought in the Battle of Waterloo (1815). Exiled to Prussia during the Second Restoration, then condemned to death for contempt, he returned to France after the revolution of 1830 and was named governor of Algeria (1834-35). There he helped in the creation of departments to deal with Arab affairs and in the establishment of a central government.
